Helen Calcraft, Founding Partner, Lucky Generals
Helen spent her first decade in advertising at AMV BBDO, and loved every minute. At 28 she became the agency's youngest ever female board director and New Business Director. She went on to London Business School’s Executive MBA programme, where she graduated with distinction. Despite taking precisely none of the school’s great courses in entrepreneurship, she then co-founded ad agency MCBD in 1999. Ten wonderful years later, MCBD was a top 25 agency. Serving some great brands including Waitrose, Virgin, the Department of Health and Hovis.
After a stint at digital agency Dare, Helen opted for start-up life all over again, with partners Danny Brooke-Taylor and Andy Nairn. Lucky Generals, founded in 2013, is a creative company for people on a mission. The Generals work on a range of missions for clients such as Amazon, AB InBev, Yorkshire Tea, and Co-op. And the partners are finding that the harder they work, the luckier they seem to get.
Helen is Chairman of the Lucky Generals/TBWA Group in the UK (but has so far been slow to learn "chairmanly duties" such as pipe smoking and golfing). She is a long-standing member of WACL and is currently helping to spearhead the timeTo movement - a cross-industry initiative to combat sexual harassment. She also sits on the fundraising and marketing committee at Cancer Research UK.
Ben Kay, Founding Partner, Pablo and ex-England and British & Irish Lions Rugby International
One of the worlds most decorated rugby players, Ben was a British & Irish Lion and won 62 England Caps. He was an integral part of England’s victorious Rugby World Cup winning team in 2003. Playing every minute of all of England’s campaign except when Sir Clive Woodward rested the majority of his front line against Uruguay. Four years later, Ben was the only player at the World Cup to play every possible minute of the competition as part of England’s remarkable resurgence in defying the odds to make it to another final.
Ben also played 288 times through the Golden era for England’s most successful club, Leicester Tigers which saw him play in an incredible 4 European Cup finals winning the tournament back to back in 2001 & 2002. Ben’s 11 year career at the club also saw him win 6 premiership titles.
Ben is a founding partner of the agency Pablo and is a commentator and pundit for BT Sport on the Premiership and European Cup, ITV for the 6 nations and Rugby World Cup and writes for The Times newspaper. He sits on the board of directors of Leicester Tigers and the board of trustees of the charity RESTART.
